Manhattan on the Thames

We know that in London takes place every year more and more financial and commercial transactions than any other city in the world. However, until recently, this business activity is not conspicuous. Offices of lawyers and bankers were in the low buildings within the old downtown of London - City.

But soon the City would have to go into the shadows. To the east of London is growing a new business center, on a scale comparable perhaps only to the lower Manhattan, the financial district of New York.

Attempts to create here in the old abandoned docks, Business Center made more than once, but due to financial downturns deal stalled, and the plans reduced to more or less conventional-scale residential areas.

In 1987, the project architect Cesar Pelli of Argentine in the London Docklands, the so-called Isle of Dogs has grown first high-rise building Canary Wharf - the highest in the UK.

But in the early 90s the market situation has deteriorated again, and this tower for several years stood in splendid isolation: not even managed to lease or sell its office space.

In the late 90s the situation changed for the better, and around the building began to Cesar Pelli, like mushrooms after rain, to grow new skyscrapers, buildings, banks and offices. It is now five huge towers glittering glass and metal, creating an entirely new town planning ensemble.

This ensemble is constructed as a new city on the project of the American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and what has already been built, bears the clear stamp of the American city.

Of course, it is more reminiscent of Manhattan - the narrow streets and squares, squeezed a 40-story skyscraper. In this urban environment - a special aesthetics, which plays a major role perfection of construction equipment. The high elevations of the towers, collected from the glass panels and metal frames are made with a jeweler's precision, that no longer seem to even work of human hands.

At the same time surprisingly, construction sites, which are now ready to surround the building, it is extremely small in size, and they are almost silent process of assembly of these structures. As a result, on the Isle of Dogs there Wednesday, is still somewhat different from Manhattan.

First of all, there are more consistently carried out the separation of road and pedestrian areas. Secondly, at ground level, almost all buildings are connected passages, corridors and halls, so that creates a pass-through access for pedestrians of all volumes, which alternately fall in the covered walkway, the open spaces and arcades.

The monumental sculpture in these open spaces is based both on the basis of figurative and non-objective sculpture. On the area of Canada is, for example, a gigantic polished granite sculpture in the form of lentils, lit from below with blue lights small, that are reflected in the lower surface, as if lifted her into the air, and near normal anthropomorphic plastic - two figures sitting on the bench men.

Skyscrapers are lit at night with lights and glow, I can even say, shine in the night sky, but they are particularly spectacular at sunset, when past them every now and then fly planes, suggestive of the terrible memories of September 11.

As the territory of the former channeled docks, all this is reflected in the water and interweaving of water and land creates the effect here is not so much in New York, and Venice.
