Lake Qarun

Originally it was a vast expanse of water, which gradually dried up in yet unspecified reasons (geological landslide, infiltration, evaporation strong because of global warming). At the time of the pharaohs in the lake water level has dropped so much that Amenemhet I (XII Dynasty) spent irrigation and drainage, as a result of which the water had risen to current levels.

The history of El-Fayoum (Ra-Uoit in Coptic means "lake, sea") is closely connected with the history of the lake. On the shores of the lake in great numbers were carried crocodiles. Residents of deities: a deity appeared in the form of a crocodile - Sebek. Later, the Greeks called Krokodilopolisom modern Medinet El-Fayoum.
Only in the 50s. XX century. resource recovery has been made - and successfully, as you can see - but the desert could not win once fertile land. In general, Qarun lake is not too deep, an average of 4 to 6 m depth with multiple "wells" depth of about 10 m. The length of the lake from shore to shore - 42 miles, and its widest point is less than 9 km. The salt content, strongly oscillating in different places of the lake, yet makes the water unsuitable for irrigation. In addition, the closer to the lake lush vegetation gives way to a grim wasteland, and the northern shore of the lake is a naked desert. You will undoubtedly be offered to take a walk on the lake by boat or small sailing boat. This is a great opportunity to swim in the lake, not touching the coast, which is pretty dirty, and admire the contrasting landscape of this place: on the one hand, lush vegetation, on the other - the barren yellow desert sands. Lakeside rich in birds. On the opposite shore of the oasis the white tents pitched their Bedouin.
